Following author Sally Rooney’s refusal to have her latest book translated into Hebrew, the Zionist Federation of UK and Ireland made the following statement:
The Zionist Federation of UK and Ireland criticises Irish author, Sally Rooney’s refusal to allow her latest novel, “Beautiful World, Where Are You?” to be translated into Hebrew. Such decisions are short-sighted and only serve to reinforce barriers to peace and reconciliation.
Richard P Woolf, Acting Chair of the Zionist Federation says: “ Culture is an incredibly powerful tool which helps build bridges between people, and create political change. By boycotting the Hebrew language, it shuts down all opportunities for engagement not just with the government of Israel and it’s representatives around the world – diplomats, other VIPs and speakers, but the majority of the people of Israel. It is counter-productive and unhelpful.
